During a four-day business trip (with a touch of social) to Portland, I cranked up the iPod nano and all 745 songs on it and plugged it into the aux cord. But instead of listening to one song or album on repeat, like usual, I went to artist -> all -> all songs -> shuffle. And so went the music exploration for the weekend.
But one song, which I hadn't listened to in quite a while, struck a cord with me. And during a trip filled with emotional highs and lows (I mean, seriously, crazy f-ing stuff), I had a couple mental breakthrough moments, related to my place in life and the place some things have in my life.
But anyway ... without further ado, and presented without further comment, I must post the lyrics that speak to me 100x more than they did when I first fell in love with this song...
Natasha Bedingfield's Wild Horses
I feel these four walls closing in
Face up against the glass
I'm looking out ... hmmm
Is this my life I'm wondering
It happened so fast
How do I turn this thing around
Is this the bed I chose to make
There's greener pastures I'm thinking about ... hmmm
Wide open spaces far away
All I want is the wind in my hair
To face the fear but not feel scared
Wild horses I wanna be like you
Throwing caution to the wind, I'll run free too
Wish I could recklessly love like I'm longing to
I wanna run with the wild horses
Run with the wild horses
I see the girl I want to be
Riding bare-back, care-free
Along the shore
If only that someone was me
Jumping head-first, head-long
Without a thought
To act and damn the consequence
How I wish it could be that easy
But fear surrounds me like a fence
I want to break free
All I want is the wind in my hair
To face the fear, but not feel scared
Oooh, wild horses I want to be like you
Throwing caution to the wind, I'll run free too
Wish I could recklessly love like I'm longing to
I wanna run with the wild horses
Run with the wild horses, oh
Recklessly abandoning my self before you
I wanna open up my heart tell him how I feel
Wild horses I wanna be like you
Throwing caution to the wind
I'll run free too
Wish I could recklessly love, like I'm longing too
I wanna run with the wild horses,
run with the wild horses, run with the wild horses

This one's for Team Fatty

A lot of people have come across FatCyclist.com in one way or another ... either through biking or through cancer reading or a variety of other things. I really don't remember how I first stumbled on Elden's blog a couple years ago, but it's been a fun, emotional, touching and/or entertaining blog since I started reading it. In my desire to a) give myself goals, b) find new things I enjoy doing and c) raise money for a good cause, I have joined Team Fatty this year to sign up for the LIVESTRONG Challenge.
The 2010 schedule includes another stop in Seattle, June 19-20. I've signed up for the 45-mile bike ride and given myself a minimum fundraising goal of $500 (which I hope to beat before March 15. If I do, I'm re-upping my goal to $1,000). If you live near (or want to travel to) San Jose, Philadelphia, Seattle or Austin and want to be part of a LIVESTRONG Challenge yourself, please go become a part of Team Fatty. Elden (Fat Cyclist)'s goal is for Team Fatty to raise $1 million this year. Last year, they raised more than $800,000.
If you'd rather give to the cause, please consider supporting my fundraising goal. Every donation helps, even $5. Or $1. But please consider skipping one trip to Starbucks (just not today's, since it's World AIDS Day) or one meal out and donating that money to LIVESTRONG instead, so we can all fight cancer together.
While many folks have stories of cancer that touch very close to them, or even have been affected themselves, I support the cancer research and treatment causes because it's very possible it will be in my future. My grandmother (my mom's mom and one of the three wonderful women who have passed the name Eda down to me) had breast cancer many years ago and had a mastectomy that kept her cancer from returning. This was well before the present chemotherapy and other treatments were in place. I understand that cancer is in my genetics.
And I also realize that people are battling the many forms of cancer every day and are still able to hold their heads high, get out of bed and face every day with hope, a smile and grand plans for a better life. If they can do that, the least I can do is to help raise money for a cancer-fighting foundation and get off my butt and go for a few bike rides.
My donation site can be found here. Please pass this along to friends and family who also may be interested. I will also do fundraising and training updates regularly on this blog. My longest ride to date is 20 miles, so 45 sounds a bit daunting right now, especially with a half-marathon the following weekend, but I'll get the work done ... and hopefully have plenty of support in the fundraising fight! Thanks for your consideration!

Seattle 5K and some tough love
So Katharine and Dan came to town for part of the weekend and we all did the Seattle 5K Saturday morning. Dan kicked ass, beating his goal of 25 minutes by at least two minutes. Kat walk/jogged most of it with me, then took off right at the end. I finished with a chip time of 45:20 (or 14:35/mile). Technically, it's my second-slowest 5k time to date, but I'm pleasantly surprised by it because of a handful of 'excuses' that kept me from almost not doing it (including not working out for the week before the run).
But it gives me a place to work off of for the winter. And there may be a few schedule changes for 2010 ... as much as I heart Eugene, I think I may do the Rock and Roll Seattle half at the end of June rather than the early-May Eugene half. And our team didn't get into Hood to Coast this year, so that's off the schedule. Adjustments will be made this week and into next ...
Meagen called tonight, too, and told me what I needed (but didn't necessarily want) to hear. The simple explanation is that I try to run away when things get tough, but I need to suck it up, tough it out and do things on my own terms -- not letting other people control the directions my journey will take.
It's been weird this week since my roommate hasn't spent the night at our place since last Friday. I don't usually know if she's going to come home or not, but it's been kind of nice to feel like I have the place to myself. Especially since my first work trip since July begins Thursday. Just a short jaunt to Portland for a few days/games, then back for 10 days before (lovely) Phoenix.
I've been drifting about most of the day, since hearing about the ambush/shooting of the four police officers in Lakewood, Wash. I haven't been able to get much done today, especially after their identities were released and I realized I'd met three of them during my last job. Tough to realize and my heart goes out to their families and dear friends/coworkers.

Biggest Loser 8 (EP 10): "You've got to remember what you felt the day you were sitting on your sofa watching the show and go 'I can do this'."
This week's Biggest Loser is the last one on campus for the final five contestants, so Bob and Jillian do a bit of "look how far you've come" workout, with the same weight and reps as the first day. They've all come quite far and it's good for them all to realize that -- keeps them motivated.
A first for the show now, they brought in Suze Orman, the financial crazy woman, to "make the connection between wealth and health." She gives them all some lessons on their credit then puts them on a treadmill where they can earn money toward a "save yourself" fund. Everyone wins at least $3,000. Pretty good deal.
Lessons:
- The US spends nearly $147 billion per year in obesity related illnesses/health issues.
- Life insurance costs more, $500-1000/year.
- A consumer can pull their FICO score all the time without it hurting the score.
- "I give 100 percent all the time to be who I am."
- Obese employees earn, on average, $7,000 less than their peers per year.
- If a family of four swapped one meal at a restaurant for one meal at home every day for a year, they would save $8,760.
- Americans spend $4.4 billion on gastric bypass every year. Approx. 220,000 people get gastic bypass surgery every year.
- Over the next 40 years, an obese person will save $1 million by going to their ideal weight. (As @mollypants said on twitter: "Seriously, I'd save $1mil over 40yrs?? Dang. I just put my cookie down.")
This week's challenge, for a vacation package to the 2010 Pro Bowl, is football, of course. They get to 'carry that weight one last time' with footballs based on how many pounds they've lost each week. The special guest to support the challenge is Steelers' pro bowler Rod Woodson. He's contributing $5,000 of athletic equipment to the winner's school of choice. Allen, not surprisingly, wins. They all finish, though, with Rudy, Amanda, Liz and Danny rounding up the group.
Two sweet moments this week were Amanda's teary chat with Bob and Danny's song he wrote about the BL experience. Now, after the last-chance workout, it's time for the weigh-in.
Liz -- 267 to 198 ( -5); 2.46%
Rudy - 442 to 296 (-12); 3.90%
Allen 325 to 230 (- 8); 3.36%
Danny 430 to 288 (-16); 5.26%
Amanda 250 to 186 (- 7); 3.63% YESSSSSSSS!
So Danny, Rudy and Amanda are definitely safe and into the final four.
Vote
Allen (Danny, Amanda); Liz (Rudy). We knew going in that Amanda was the tie-breaker and, in my mind, it made sense for her to keep Allen, not Liz. Allen is less of a threat based on how much muscle he already has AND Liz was a b---h and voted for Amanda a few weeks earlier. But Amanda claims she became friends with Liz, wanted to keep another woman and wanted the challenge.
In his follow up, Allen is down to 220. He works out with his wife now and got to give the check for $5,000 to his daughter's school with the Indy Colts mascot.

Baby steps
I survived the treadmill last night.
Or, more importantly, my knee survived. Sure, it's still a little twinge-y this morning, and was slightly stiff last night, but I made sure to stretch it out well and rubbed it down before I went to bed.
What I did in 30 minutes on the treadmill:
5 min. warmup at 3.0
1 min. jog at 5.0
4 recover at 3.2
1:15 at 5.0
3:45 at 3.2
1:15 at 5.0
3:45 at 3.2
1 at 5.0
3:30 at 3.2
0:30 at 7.0
5 at 3.2/3.0 (cooldown)
The plan: I'll be on the treadmill 2-3 times per week. Every week (or when I feel comfortable at said speed), I will increase the time by 0:15. So, for example, next week's will be: 1:15/3:45; 1:30/3:30; 1:30/3:30; 1:15/3:45. And then I'll increase the 30-second sprint by .2.
Some weeks will undoubtedly take me longer than others, but this is a more measured/consistent way to work on my running and to make sure my knee wants to play along. Plus, I always enjoy imagining Jillian Michaels standing in front of my treadmill yelling at me during the 30-second sprint. :)

Biggest Loser 8 (EP 9): "I'm becoming the strong person I never thought I could be. I'm done running away from my problems."
Biggest Loser meets makeover week with Tim Gunn and Tabitha ... should be interesting.
Rebecca -- cute outfit and hair, and she gets to see her sister. Awww.
Danny -- looks closer to his age (39)! and his wife and kids are there to surprise him. So cute.
Allen -- looks DAMN good in his shiny suit, and gets to see his wife and daughter.
Amanda -- adorable! hair and outfit. And her mom's so proud.
Rudy -- no beard! and a pretty wife and adorable little girls to see him,
Liz -- looks younger for sure, has her husband and grown daughter there.
And now it's time for them to all give speeches to an audience of 300 people. Eeek. Good, heartfelt speeches about their transformations. ... and now the challenge is to cross a canyon. Rudy wins a two-week trip to the new Biggest Loser resort in St. George, Utah.
After a short workout, it's time for the weigh-in to begin. Three guys and three gals waiting.
Danny -- 304, -12, 3.80%
Rudy --- 308, -16, 4.94%
Allen -- 238, -5, 2.08%
Rebecca 206, -3, 1.44%
Liz ---- 203, -3, 1.46%
Amanda - 193, -9, 4.46%
So Rebecca and Liz are the bottom two.
Vote
Rebecca (Danny, Rudy), Liz (Amanda). Rebecca's pissed because, once again, Rudy's an ASSHOLE. I really, really hate Rudy.
Rebecca's follow up ... she's from 279 to 206 on the ranch. She's lost 107 pounds in five months and ran a half-marathon. Damn, girl.

Biggest Loser 8 (EP 8): "Life happens right now. Transformation happens right now."
Biggest Loser at the halfway mark! And the big news is that two will go home this week. Yikes! Red line is out, two for the yellow line.
Pop challenge is first and a one-pound advantage goes to the winner. Amanda and Liz cannot compete, so there are six to chase tennis balls. Allen wins and gets the extra pound. Then the contestants tell Bob and Jill about the red line and they flip.
Wow. Bob is *freaking* about "playing god" ... he is just going crazy about this. ... After crazy workouts, they go to a circus. Jump through your opponents hoop to eliminate them. The final person standing gets immunity (big one this week). The kids and older folks gang up together against each other, giving Rudy immunity.
Two last-chance workouts, one with Bob and one with Jill, and then it's suddenly weigh-in time.
Immune: Rudy -- -8; 324; 2.41%
Shay -- -17; 376; 4.33% (Fastest woman to 100 -- nine weeks)
Amanda - -5; 202; 2.42%
Rebecca -10; 209; 4.57%
Danny - -17; 316; 5.11%
Allen - -10; 243; 4.35% (+1 pound advantage)
Liz --- -12; 206; 5.50%
Daniel - -5; 256; 1.92%
So Daniel's eliminated by the red line and Shay and Amanda -- two of the youngun's -- are up for a vote together.
Vote
Shay (Rebecca, Allen, Rudy), Amanda (Danny, Liz). Shay is eliminated, 3-2, on the night she has lost 100 pounds, in nine weeks on the ranch, breaking a BL record for females.
Daniel -- On the update, from 454 pounds last season to 239 as of last week probably. He goes back to his first orange teammate, David, and tries to him help. Good on Daniel.
As for Shay, we don't get an update -- and that makes me sad.

'Till next week and it's makeover week with Tim Gunn and Tabitha. But no Shay. :( I'm very curious to see Jillian's reaction.

Biggest Loser 8 (EP 7): Bob loves Obama
Time for last week's Biggest Loser and we start out with the remaining contestants heading to Washington D.C. This should be interesting...
The week's goal is to help their fellow Americans. Speaking to congressmen and visiting the White House. And now they're also competing as individuals.
First pop challenge and they're competing for the most people to show up to a huge Bob and Jillian workout. Liz, of all people, wins. And then Bob and Jillian start working out the group ... cracks me up. So for the challenge, they have four different tasks, one at a time to advance to the next round. First, run a mile. Second, collect enough pennies to fill up to the line in a clear pipe. Third, stand on a pedestal with an exercise ball over their heads. Two advance to the fourth and final challenge -- Rudy and Rebecca. Finally, 206 steps on a step-aerobics step in front of the White House. Rebecca wins immunity. Ugh.
Lots of workouts and such, then off to the weigh-in -- as individuals, of course.
Rebecca w/immunity -- -4; 219
Shay -- -9; 393; 2.24%
Tracey -3; 194; 1.52%
Daniel -11; 261; 4.04%
Allen - -9; 253; 3.44%
Danny -12; 333; 3.48%
Rudy -- -9; 232; 2.64%
Liz --- -3; 218; 1.36%
Amanda -7; 207; 3.27%
Tracey and Liz up for nomination.
Vote
Tracey (Amanda, Danny, Daniel, Rebecca), Liz (Shay). Allen and Rudy didn't need to show their votes. Tracey goes home with four votes. Catching up, she looks awesome and was able to actually run a mile. Still a b---h though, in my opinion.
Best quotes
"If this doesn't validate our show, let me tell you, nothing's going to." -- Bob, re: visiting the White House
"You can control what happens by controlling yourself." -- Jillian
Too many quotes of Bob's absolute love of the White House/Obamas. :) Love.
'Till next week (er, tonight...) and two people are eliminated.

Tried something new
So after a first encounter with bar trivia night last night at Finn's, Kaitlin and I got up and went to kickboxing this morning.
I think it's a bad sign when, after the first five minutes of "warm-up", I'm done. I really wanted class to be over, but we had 55 more minutes of suffering.
It wasn't quite as bad as the opening minutes led me to believe it would be, but I am quite sore all over and it hurts to bend down and pick things (for instance, the cat) up. So he has to come to me today.
I have a lot of stuff on my to-do list this week, not even including a butt-load of work I need to do. So I have to make sure I get up every morning and workout, otherwise it won't happen. This also means I need to go to bed earlier, so I can get up earlier, so I can deal with the east coast people before they're having dinner. Have I mentioned lately how my normal schedule and this job make me better suited for the east coast time zone? Yeah, didn't think so. Well, they do ... but I won't go over there, so I guess I'm SOL either way?
It's been almost a week since Chris Lieto spoke in Seattle and I'm going to fail at a recap post, because, frankly, I've forgotten a lot of the more expanded comments he made. However, a few highlights/key points: "All things are possible to he/she who believes." (Mark 9:23); “Pain is temporary. It may last a minute, or an hour, or a day, or a year, but eventually it will subside and something else will take its place. If I quit, however, it lasts forever." (Lance Armstrong); Potential --> Action --> Results --> Belief --> Potential --> Action --> Results, etc.; work on visualization, it might actually work; amino acids might be functionally helpful during extended (HIM/IM) training. That probably makes no sense to anyone but me, but if anyone wants an explanation of any of them, ask.
I know there's other things to write, but I'm off to go take care of that ever-growing to-do list.
